You can format a drive in OS X using two applications: Disk Utility and Terminal If the Security Options button is not available, Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase on the storage device.Formatting an external drive on your Mac is quite easy, though it isn’t as evident and obvious as it is on a PC. Secure erase options are available only for some types of storage devices.
